The Dolby Atmos Renderer allows you to generate channel-based re-renders, including a streamlined stereo mix using the Stereo Direct feature.

Stereo Direct is a monitoring and re-render layout introduced in Dolby Atmos Renderer v5.3 and supported in select DAWs with internal Dolby Atmos rendering. Unlike traditional downmix methods that require creating a 5.1 downmix (such as Lo/Ro or Direct Render with room balance) before generating a stereo output, Stereo Direct provides a direct stereo mix of your Dolby Atmos mix, bypassing this intermediary step. This approach reduces complexity, saves time, and offers enhanced creative flexibility by introducing an additional downmix option.

Users can easily audition the Stereo Direct output within the Dolby Atmos Renderer by selecting it from the monitoring dropdown, allowing quick toggling between 2.0 Direct and standard 2.0 downmixes for better comparison and decision-making. Additionally, customizable trim controls offer precise artistic control over the stereo mix, enabling fine adjustments to the stereo re-render of the Atmos mix.

Importantly, the Stereo Direct file must be delivered separately alongside the Dolby Atmos master file, as it is not embedded in the ADM like traditional downmixes and does not include any LFE content.

How to Export a Stereo Direct Re-render

To export a Stereo Direct re-render, it must first be added to the list of available re-renders.

1. Select Input and Master > Re-renders

2. Once in the Re-renders page, select 2.0 Direct from the Layout section and click the Add re-render button.

3. If desired, you may alter the settings for the 2.0 Direct by clicking on Properties in the 2.0 Direct (Offline) box. You can make changes to the following parameters:

a. Name

b. Layout

c. Content Group Types

4. Once you have made the desired changes, click the Accept button in the Re-renders properties page, then click the Accept button on the main Re-renders window. This will return you to the main window.

5. To export a Stereo Direct 2.0 render from an open Dolby Atmos master file, select File > Export Audio > Re-renders.

6. Select your desired re-renders, including the 2.0 Direct render.

7. Name the file and save.

Advanced workflow: Making additional adjustments to the Stereo Mix

In some cases, you may want to make adjustments to your mix when converting from Atmos to Stereo. While the customizable Stereo Direct Trims offer a great way to control the overall level balances, additional adjustments—such as EQ or reverb tweaks—can further enhance how the mix translates in stereo.

To achieve this, we suggest the following workflow:

Save the project under a new name (i.e. “Songtitle_StereoAdjust”).

Set monitoring to Stereo Direct.

While listening to the track in Stereo Direct, make additional mix adjustments as needed for Stereo.

Print an ADM BWF of this new mix version and create the Stereo Direct Re-render (Make sure to only use this ADM BWF for the Stereo Direct Re-render, and do not deliver it elsewhere).
