The Dolby Atmos Renderer is a software application for recording Dolby Atmos master files that allows monitoring in a wide range of speaker layouts. It has the capability of using up to 128 input channels that can be defined as either bed channels or objects. The input configuration of a session is entirely separated from the output configuration of a system, and the Renderer connects those two defined environments. 

The Dolby Atmos Renderer is the central element of any Dolby Atmos mixing system, working in tandem with your DAW to render your mix to any playback environment, based on the audio and positional metadata you author in the DAW.  

The Dolby Atmos Renderer also includes a binaural renderer, which can be used to create and monitor binaural mixes on headphones. 

Today, there are DAWs with integrated Dolby Atmos rendering capability, including Avid Pro Tools, Apple Logic Pro, Steinberg Nuendo and Cubase, Presonus Studio One. DaVinci Resolve and Merging Technologies Pyramix. These integrations allow creators to handle most, if not all, of their Dolby Atmos workflows within the DAW. There are certain workflows where the Dolby Atmos Renderer application may still be required. These include: 

  • Dolby Atmos Music Panner support 

  • Support for larger post-production workflows like dubbing using multi-system configurations 

  • Use with the Dolby Atmos Album Assembler

  • Recording and punching into a .atmos master file 

  • Export of MP4 files 

  • Built-in room correction tools 

  • Additional speaker configurations (beyond 9.1.6, 7.1.4, 5.1.4, 5.1.2, 7.1, 5.1, 2.0, binaural) 

  • Speaker array mode 

  • Ability to monitor live re-renders beyond 5.1 loudness and stereo/binaural 

The Dolby Atmos Renderer installer also includes the Dolby Atmos Music Panner plug-in, Dolby Atmos Binaural Settings plug-in and Dolby LTC Generator plug-in.
